john / open

Do you know who isn't interested in dancing? John.

He's set himself up on the sidelines to watch the carnage. At some point, he'll make his escape, but that grows less and less urgent as the music shifts to more informal and familiar strains.

"We'd all have probably attended with less complaint if it had been advertised as a party rather than a lesson," John says to whoever is adjacent to him, tipping his cup idly in one hand. "We're overdue for some kind of celebration, I'd think."

Congratulations to everyone on surviving this long. That's an occasion to mark, right?

"And if the food had been half as... complicated," Anders says as he brings his own cup over. He'll be rejoining the dancing soon enough, especially now that it's actually dancing and not boring parading about. "Easier fare, make clear that there will be real dancing after the posing and preening, and people would absolutely be happier. But now I know how much I don't know about forks, that's progress, right?"

He snorts. He's never going to need to know which fork to use. They don't send rebel mages to the nice parties.

They don't send pirates either, generally. After the disaster of the last mission, they probably won't be sending John anywhere even if it wasn't his fault they were kidnapped and presumed dead.

"Don't tell the taskmasters, but I'm still not clear on the purpose of so many utensils."

Which could ostensibly be blamed on a life of piracy (more or less) but it wasn't as if John had ever had access to such things before he'd fallen in with Flint and the Walrus men. Dirt poor apostates aren't prioritizing table manners.

"It's interesting though, to see who takes to it and who doesn't."

Or interesting for John, at least. Maybe less so for people who aren't bent on manipulating any given situation to their advantage.

"There was a wake."

Supposedly. He'd been a bit preoccupied to think of attending — glances to John without skating his stump. The smoothness of it speaks to practice more than anything, Maker knows he's gotten a good gawking eyeful before. (The ramparts aren't only a pleasant place to watch the sky.)

"A soiree for the Age, I can't imagine what kept you."

"Just some little things. The Deep Roads, a mountain range. Minor inconveniences."

Glossing over the rest of the inconveniences they'd survived. John had spent some time trading on those events, letting the Walrus men hear and glory in his survival, but it's hard to tell whether or not he can gain anything by delving further into it with members of the Riftwatch.

"Did we interrupt the proceedings before the dancing could begin?"

"No graves for that, I'm afraid." To dance on. Etcetera. "Though I suppose our collective dignity serves for it tonight."

What were they going to do with the teeth? He should remember. He doesn't (he isn't drinking now, the level of his cup hasn't moved in an hour). He tips it in toast.

"To your belated resurrection."

"I'll drink to that."

It's only polite, isn't it.

"Now, what do you suppose we're going to do with all these manners? Make a ruin of the baron's next dinner party?"

Something has to happen. If John's learned anything in life, it's that certain betrayals must and will be answered. The only complication is Riftwatch itself, and what they can and can't be seen doing.
