He'll be rejoining the dancing soon enough, especially now that it's actually dancing and not boring parading about. "Easier fare, make clear that there will be real dancing after the posing and preening, and people would absolutely be happier. But now I know how much I don't know about forks, that's progress, right?"

He snorts. He's never going to need to know which fork to use. They don't send rebel mages to the nice parties.

They don't send pirates either, generally. After the disaster of the last mission, they probably won't be sending John anywhere even if it wasn't his fault they were kidnapped and presumed dead.

"Don't tell the taskmasters, but I'm still not clear on the purpose of so many utensils."

Which could ostensibly be blamed on a life of piracy (more or less) but it wasn't as if John had ever had access to such things before he'd fallen in with Flint and the Walrus men. Dirt poor apostates aren't prioritizing table manners.

"It's interesting though, to see who takes to it and who doesn't."

Or interesting for John, at least. Maybe less so for people who aren't bent on manipulating any given situation to their advantage.
