Katniss has been taking all her lessons seriously, but the ones she had been working on most were the rogue lessons - lessons in climbing and sneaking in and out of places. Knife throwing into all kinds of targets. Climbing up and down buildings, and quite literally falling off of them.

No one was quite sure what she was training so hard for -- but then most of them had not been to the Emprise du Lion. They had not seen the cages. Katniss was not going to throw away their only chance to save those people, so whatever she needed to know? She would do.

So don't be surprised if she drops in on you, as she falls back into piles of hay or down in a leap.

"No, you just like shooting people's lunches out of their hands," he retorts, raising a brow at and tilting his head knowingly.

"That's quite a feat. What about a shot not involving targets or dummies? Not in Skyhold - out in the woods, or any other place with a moving target." He's just getting a feel for her, figuring what Katniss has been up to, mostly so he can consider if things would go past the shooting range.

"Only when they deserve it." Is Katniss's tart reply, as she leads the way to the range.

Ah, so now they were talking moving targets. "Easy - goose in flight off of Lake Luthas while I was standing on the opposite shore. Right through the eye, too." That had been a good day for hunting. "Next best shot was when I was being charged by a Venatori. Less distance, more peril."

Garris allows himself a grin at the reply, though doesn't say anything else on it since he wasn't looking to have an annoyed shooting partner.

The shot with the Venatori is impressive, but it's the one with the goose that has Garris giving a low, impressed whistle. "That sounds like quite the feat. Is this the bow you did it with or was it a different one?"

She looked up at him, flashing a small, pleased smile, before she unhooked her bow and offered it to him. "It was my father's - a present from my mother. It's made of ironbark. Never needed anything else, outside of new bow strings and a fine polish."

A curious tilt of her eyebrows, "What about you?"

Ironbark. He's heard of it, but never seen it. Or held it for that matter, which he does delicately - regardless of how durable it was - after hearing that it was a family gift and heirloom. "I'm a bit envious." He's been through several bows himself. Course that could have been that one stolen and another he bashed on someone's head.

"What about me?" Garris raises his own brows, looking at Katniss with equal curiosity. There had been a few questions that he had asked. Which one was she asking?

"About the bow? Don't be. I didn't want to inherit this soon." She took it back, carefully tucking it back on her back. She thought about it, before saying calmly, "We'll start from the beginning - best shot you've ever pulled off?"

"Hm." He certainly has to think about that one. There's been quite a number of them, but he didn't know about best. "Well there was the one time I shot an arrow through some fire into some explosives and sent four men flying... Though I'll have to say the time I went upside down on a tree limb and caught a man in full armor through the eye slot."

Now it was Katniss's turn to be startled and amazed. "How the hell did you make a shot hanging upside down?" There's a pause, then a very real, "And can you teach me how to do it?"

[middle_of_calibrating]

"Are you telling me you don't know how to shoot while hanging upside down?" There's a smirk on his face, but he is honestly just teasing her, amused really, especially with her asking to be taught. "Can you hang upside down, firstly?"

"No, I know how to balance myself upside down, because I thought it would be useful when hiding. But I never tried to pull off a shot that way." She arched an eyebrow at him. "Probably easier than you can, yes."

[middle_of_calibrating]

"Really? Guess that's something else we'll have to see. I don't find it that hard to do. Course I wouldn't want to hang upside down for too long." He raises a brow back, turning a bit and walking sideways as they continued on. "Shooting upside down does take some time and practice though. It's a completely view that you have to get to."

"Well then I should be just fine." One corner of her mouth twisted as she watched him walk sideways. "I'm always looking for a new way to surprise the enemy -- so I'll get started practicing right away."

"Oh it'll surprise them for sure, but it's even better if they never even see it coming," he says with a bit of a chuckle, a grin starting to pull at his lips. "Is there a proper place to even practice shooting and hanging upside down at the same time?"

"The forest in the valley, of course. Have you gone there?" She asked, arching an eyebrow at him. "Trees are the perfect place to practice balance and climbing, after all."

[middle_of_calibrating]

"Ah. Been down there for First Day but not since then. Guess it kind of slipped my mind." It hadn't really occurred to him to go practice down in the valley, mostly since he often did it alone and with not knowing the area he was a bit skeptical.

After a bit more they eventually find themselves at the practice dummies, which were thankfully still whole enough to practice on. "Ladies first."

"You should. If nothing else the hunting is excellent." She stated, and they spent the rest of the walk in companionble silence.

At his urging, she stepped forward and pulled an arrow from the quiver. Focused on the target, she breathed out, and let the arrow fly, where it hit right off center mass, but in the bullseye.

"Good form." He gives Katniss a nod with the compliment before drawing his own bow. Lining up his own shot Garris' arrow hits just below the other arrow, also in the bullseye.

She grinned at him, before stepping back to watch him shoot. She whistles out her appreciation at the shot, before she takes a few steps backwards, and to the right, of the next target.

Breath out.

Focus.

Shoot.

And as if she is barely trying at all, the arrow sinks into the bullseye.

He clicks his tongue and nods at the shot before taking three steps back and to the left before aiming at the same target Katniss had shot.

Garris takes less time to shoot this time around, hitting the bullseye as well just to the right of her own.

Oh ho, like that then, is it? She smirks, and then goes to the next target, taking ten paces back from the three he was already back. Arrow notched, deep breath.

Bam. Imbedded into the wood, right through the center of the bullseye.

Oh she wanted to play like that then? He was all for increasing the difficulty slowly, but it seemed Katniss was interested in shutting him down quickly. Game on.

Looking over his shoulder Garris gives her a look, lips pulling up into a large grin as he stays where he's at. Keeping eye contact for a moment he pulls out three arrows from his quiver between three different fingers.

Turning back around Garris quickly lines up his first shot at the right target. He pauses for a moment before he's shooting each of the targets in quick succession in a span of a few seconds. None of them are exactly in the center but each have hit the bullseye.

Katniss arched an eyebrow at that -- because okay, he had speed down. Let's try moving and accuracy though, hm? She plucked out one arrow and then started moving down the line of targets - pull, aim, fire, pull, aim, fire.

Each arrow thudded in, right in center mass.

Garris raises a brow in turn, giving a shrug as he walks back to the distance she's at. Moving and accuracy isn't that hard for him, starting at the opposite side and hitting each target in the center as well, though just a bit off from where her shafts were.

"Impressive. Can you do that from a horse?"

She whistles, because not many can keep up with her on that. She gives him a more considering look, before she nods. "Of course. It's all about balance in the saddle. That ...I have no problem with."

Odd shoots from upside down? Yeah, hadn't tried those ... yet.

Living off the land at home, Kirkwall, being a mercenary, you learn quite a few things to keep you alive. "Good to hear cause I don't think we've got the space here to try that." He is clearly enjoying himself having not shot against someone else in a bit.
