Wrap up warm! It probably goes without saying that certain medical personnel will be less than sympathetic to those who come to them with colds after this.
The valley near Skyhold has never really completely defrosted, given how high up they are in the Frostbacks, and Adelaide's students have found themselves working with an environment very receptive to the reintroduction of cold, even in the summer months.
The battle field is impressive. Each of the six teams has their own fortress, forming a rough circle on a thick blanket of snow. Each fort has one flag flapping over all others, the only one each has that cannot be stolen (or, at least, would be very challenging.) Their other seven flags are considerably smaller, and where they are depends entirely on how the team opts to defend them. The vast majority of the snow is white, but there are generous patches within and around each fort that matches that Team Fort's colour. Each fort is a little different, but comes with a catapult build inside it, and scattered around the field are large snow drifts, some battering rams, and a trebuchet. (No trebearchet, sadly. We can always dream.)
Every team member is given a sash of their team colour, and a round wooden shield that is so padded that hurting someone with it would actually be quite an accomplishment.
Far enough away to be spared the fighting, but not to entirely escape the chill that has been renewed in the valley, are some benches. There is warm cider and some food being served, and people are welcome to come and watch (and laugh, and judge) and/or hang out with the noble warriors once the fight has wound down.

IC-ish RULES AND STUFF.
1. NO WEAPONS, NO MAGIC.
Assume there is unlimited snow - some dyed to match team colours - so there are snowballs galore! Every person also gets an extremely well padded round shield as a chance to defend themselves. Don't use the shield as a weapon, pls and ty.
2. FLAAAAGS.
Each team gets seven flags that match their team colour. The IC goal is to capture as many flags as you can, but OOCly this is flexible and timey wimey and you don't need to worry about keeping track of flags bc who has time for that?
3. NO VIOLENCE.
Or, more accurately, no going out there to hurt people - it is a snow fight and there is siege equipment, let's not kid ourselves. That said; no tackling anyone smoller than you. If you hurt someone, apologise and don't be an ass. Don't make an NPC referee come after you.
4. BASICALLY JUST HAVE FUN.
Characters can't be eliminated unless they're being a big jerk, but no one wants that to happen because friendship is magic, or something. If it's fun and its awesome then odds are it's totally fine, unless it'd put a character in danger.
There will be an IC prize for winning, which will be ICly due to happen after Orlais since that opens up so soon after the snow fight.
A quick recap on how the winners will be determined OOCly - in three weeks time I will do a tally of points based on comment count and tagging around done per team. Three weeks will hopefully allow everyone a chance to dive in even if unexpected RL things happen, as they are wont to do, and not put on too much pressure with the Orlais plots opening up.
How to get points:
1. Open starters! Every team will get 2 points per team member that posts an open starter.
2. Tag around! Every team will get 2 points every time a team member tags a new person. (If character A tags characters B, C & D they will get 6 points total for tagging around - three different threads with character A and character B would still only result in 2 points.)
3. Keep threads going, hop around and have fun! Every comment by a team member will be worth 1 point. (Multi-comment responses ie. one tag split over two or more comments will still only count for 1 point.)
4. Be hilarious, do something awesome, idk persuade me that something is worth an extra point. NO SERIOUSLY, TELL ME I love excuses to reward people for puns and/or being absurd.
5. IC rule breaking may result in points being taken away because how rude.
SNOW TEAMS.
merrill | team raspberry | ota
"Okay!"
Clapping her hands together, Merrill looks at the assembled members of her team. They are, for the most part, people she knows and likes -- some are more unfamiliar than others, but each and every one gets a bright smile.
There is, for the record, bright red war paint smeared across her face and her vallaslin, in the style of Hawke.
"So, the most important part is to have fun, of course! But we should definitely try to win, and I think we definitely can! I want to get the area around our flag covered in ice; it's cold enough that if we melt the snow it should refreeze into ice, and that will help as far as defense. As for the rest? Let's be creative. Remember, if it isn't against the rules, it's open season!"
This is said in the cheeriest voice imaginable, which- well, possibly makes it even more sinister, or just makes it ridiculous.
"Any questions? Plans? Who should we go after first?"
it's a bird, it's a plane, it's- an elf? | open
The rules state that you cannot tackle anyone smaller than you. The rules say nothing about using other people to tackle those people. Merrill is rather small, both in height and in width, and she trusts Martel. What this means is that every once in a while there will be a WHOOSH followed by a thud, sometimes accompanied by a yell (either a battle cry or one of fight) as Merrill is used as an elven projectile.
Sometimes she has snow in hand, which she often immediately tries to shove down her target's clothing. Other times she's empty-handed and tries to scramble up before whoever she was flung at in order to get between them and the flag.
Sometimes, she goes for the tickle.
and never again shall we submit | open
When not being thrown around the battlefield, Merrill is relying on more traditional tactics -- throws of snow, the use of her shield (with inward thanks for Aveline for training, unless it's Aveline she's facing) to block snow, and the use of ice to keep others away from the Raspberry flag. While she's a mage, she's Dalish; she uses her environment as best she can, guerrilla tactics of distracting noises and, on some occasions, being used as a living shield when someone might want to tackle one of her larger teammates.
She's covered in multicolored snow by the end of it, but she's having a good time.
((prose or brackets, will match!))

ADELAIDE | TEAM VIOLET | OTA
"Who knows how to calibrate a catapult?" First thing's first. Head high, voice at a tight, authoritative clip, Adelaide survey's her team. She'd also seen the battering rams and trebuchet- trying to claim that particular bit of equipment, no matter how long or short a time, would be helpful. "And who has the best eyesight? We'll need someone on the battlements to ensure they don't take us unawares. Anyone comfortable with scouting- each fort ought to have a back or side entrance that is difficult to cover. If we find that? We have a way in to get the flags."
Position them high, assault from a distance with the siege equipment, scout, destroy. Or, well. Steal flags. "Be mindful of potential ice patches, return regularly for rest and cider to keep warm, and-"
Of course.
"Show no mercy."
Laying Siege ( open )
While her mobility is limited by the leg it does not stop Adelaide from skidding through the snow and hurling her own violet covered projectiles at those perched upon the walls of their fort. Any opportunity she has to attempt to knock someone on the high ground with a whap of snow. Stealth isn't really an option but she does try to get around the back to find some way in that isn't through the front gate. Shield slung on her back or held overhead to protect against any reprisal, she continues her assault.
You Shall Not Pass ( open )
Early on it is easier for her to move- but after an hour or so the ache sets in with regular twinges and Adelaide takes up post instead before the drawbrige of her fort. Shield in hand and pile of colored snow next to her, she holds the line before any that would come to the gate.
Unless they have a battering ram, in which case a hasty retreat is called for, but! Until then, she holds and calls positions to those still on the battlements for a volley from on high.

"And here we have the official team schnapps. Raspberry, strawberry and rosewater." Ruby speaks as she lays out shot glasses along the table with the deft hands of an experienced bartender, grinning at the closest person to her. "Ready to kick some serious ass?"
( a. ready, aim-- )
Fire. Once upon a time, when she was still Red from a small village where everyone knew everyone else's names, she'd been the best shot in the village with a bow and arrow. Aiming a snowball is a little different, sure, but she is still ruthless. A quiet growl of exertion tears out of her throat, and her target? Well, there's some dramatic red splatter, probably.
"Sorry!" She doesn't sound at all sorry. That smile is also not at all sorry.
( b. crashtackles )
Compared to a whole lot of people, Ruby isn't all that tall. Above average, maybe, but not tall.
The rules of this game suddenly make her feel like she is unreasonably tall, as she gasps from the shock of the cold and for air as she rises out of a snow bank, appalled by her life. "Worst rule idea ever."

James || Team Goldenrod || OTA
Ladies and gentlemen, we have come here today to win glory and honor for the great Team Goldenrod.
[James's solemn speech began this way, and was only slightly put off by the giant penis on a goldenrod background that flew above their heads. You can thank Burns for that. Still, with his padded shield and goldenrod banner across his chest, James was going to be as Serious as he Could be because this was SnowWar.]
What we lack in superior numbers, and sadly magic and or weaponry, we will in fact make up for in guile. I believe outside of Certain Other Teams, we have the most guile available. Ergo, all plans that are sneaky plans, have my full attention.
Guarding the Gates
James was not the sort of leader to control the battle from the rear. Ergo, in front of the snow fortress he stood, padded shield at the ready, snowball in hand to take out any approaching enemies. He wisely had a stock of snowballs at his elbow, and was getting more as Interceptor ran out a shield full of them as soon as they were made for the front line warriors.
WILDCARD

Korrin | Team Seafoam | OTA
The tall, horned woman only has one opponent on the battlefield larger than herself, so Taashath will be sought out for a tackling whenever she spots him and his attention is elsewhere. Otherwise, she'll be on the alert for smaller people mistakenly thinking of her as an easy target in that area. While she'll hold back on her strength enough to not actually harm anyone, that competitive streak ensures that she won't make it easy for them.
She's not just looking out for herself, but her teammates as well. Providing cover -or a distraction- for whoever needs it, she'll run interference with that shield while they get closer to nearest enemy flag. Eirlys will be a particular focus, though anyone who looks like they need her assistance will get it.

The Friendly Giant | Teammates
All the tackle banning and deafness aside, it didn't mean that Taas couldn't do what he was bred to do - conquer. Being a big, massive shield for his teammates to hide behind, he continues forward in utter hails of snowballs to get those flags.
By the time he's toppled by snow, his team should be able to go grab whatever they needed and run off.
The Still Friendly But-Technically-Your-Enemy Giant | Enemy Teams
Taas might not be allowed to tackle anyone, but he can make pretty damn big snowballs and has a long range with those strong arms. He's scooping up and hurling snowballs with a big grin, and smiles just as much when he's hit right back.
While he tries to always have a teammate at his back, it's still possible to sneak up on him and shove snow down his pants. Just because.
All Is Fair In Love And War | Cyril
Cyril and the warrior seem to work very well together, communicating over the battlefield in short sign. Most of the time, it's the elf the qunari has watching his back, and he makes sure to shield him from the worst barrages.
"So, do you want me to throw you like that Dalish girl?"

"Haaaa! Get wrecked!" Maybe...maybe duck. Maybe duck before his mini catapult idea actually hits home.
b. Someone's carrying a flag. Someone not wearing your color! Is that flag yours? Get that motherfucker. "I can't believe all those capture the flag exercises in that fucking canyon are paying off!" Christ but he can move when he feels like he's about to get tackled with snow at any second.
c. Team "Okay, so, if I knew everyone's strengths here, I'd totally come up with a better battle plan, but--" Actually Church I think you will find it is Cassandra who is the tactician here.
"Question: are there any consequences for accidentally hitting your own teammates?" It's pertinent. Because...accidents...happen.
At some point he might get tired enough to not want to run around for five or ten minutes and will sit inside just making a shitload of snowballs for all to restock and wreak havoc when they come through. "Go get 'em, tiger."

Rydia | Team Apricot | OTA
"I suppose it's time to defeat our enemies and show everyone the superior power of apricot colored snow, isn't it? Remember, today we will take no prisoners..."
[Rydia never talked with anyone of her team but there's no need to be shy, right? The summoner offers a wide smile, clapping her hands and jumping on the spot. Oh, she may be totally uninterested in the flag-catching part of the game but throwing colored snow on other people's head sounds fun.
Wearing yellow clothes wasn't probably one of the best ideas but the summoner had nothing to keep herself warm and the poor set for hunters she picked was the cheapest option avaiable so... they will do, even if the color stains will be even more evident on them.]
"So, what is the plan?"
Battlefield | Open to all
"You will not escape!"
Who cares about flags when you can throw snowballs at people? She spent most of the time ambusing people to shove snow under her victim's clothes or tackling people trying to push them on the wet and colored floor (Too bad she always failed at that, being small and weak, in the end she got more paint on herself than her targets).
Oh, well, she's having fun... and apparently she's triyng to get you now.

Sadira | Team Goldenrod | OTA
Sadira wanted more than anything to be a Knight-Enchanter. That meant leading from the front, magic in hand. Since magic was not allowed, she was instead running and screaming even, towards people with her shield held before her like a battering ram. She aimed for the larger opponents, people who could take a hit while doing her best to weave and dodge as she trampled through the snow. Clutched in her gloved hand was a ball of dark yellow snow, ready and waiting to be smashed into someone's face, or shoved into clothes. There was more yellow snow stuffed into the satchel she had slung across her chest.
II.Snow Fort
Tired from running back and forth across the field, she was taking a moment to catch her breath and to refill her bag of colored snow. This also meant she was defending the fort and giving someone else a chance to run out and cause mayhem if they wished. As she peeked out over the edge of the snow fort's battlements, her mass black curls (some of it stained different colors) made her an instant target.
III.Like a wrecking ball (only not really)
She was on the tall side and with a bit more muscle to her than most mages, but she was still lean and by far not the biggest or the tallest target on the field. Her biggest advantage was speed and surprise, even if she wasn't very stealthy. Half hidden by a snow bank, she waited until someone larger than her came close before leaping towards them into a tackle. Except-- this might have been a bad idea. A very bad idea.
“Maker's breath!” was all she had time to shout before impact.

Ellana | Team Apricot | OTA, prose or brackets
I'm good at following instructions, but not at coming up with tactics.
[ Let's just get that out of the way right now. ]
Also, I don't have very good aim with snowballs, but I'll try. Just tell me what I should do.
{ ota }
[ Throughout the day, Ellana does the best she can to contribute to her team. She stays at the fort, guarding flags and pelting people with snow (and possibly full-body tackling those who get a flag -- sorry, but literally the only people smaller than her are other Dalish females). But then she heads out for the other forts, doing what she can to either capture a flag, or support a teammate in their capture of a flag.
By the end of the day, her clothes are streaked with a rainbow of colors, her cheeks are pink, and she's had a very good time, both with her team and the enemy teams. ]

Samouel | Team Apricot | {prose or brackets}
"Did they really give people catapults for a snow fight?" Don't get him wrong, it was pretty impressive, but it seemed a bit much. With that question finally off his chest, Sam moves to help anyone with their shield before working on his own - hey they had them, he was going to put it to use.
"So how do we do this? Defend the fort and send out strike teams?" They all couldn't just stay at the fort, and they all couldn't be out on the field. Well not without leaving their flag unguarded of course.
{On the Attack}
Sam gives a bit of a quiet cheer to himself when he sees a poof of white and apricot, grinning slightly with a bit of a shrug if they turn to look at him. He's certainly having fun with pelting people with colored snow. Even so he's relentless if the person is too close to the base, more so if by a flag.
{Come At Me- Oof}
It's good that they have a rule about tackling, but damn if some aren't taking good advantage of this. He's starting to lose count how many times he's found himself in a snowbank or at least having someone shove a ball of colored snow down his back.
Sometimes there is a yell to at least warn him before it happens, but for the most part it's the sound of snow crunching then a weight slamming into him, then snow everywhere.
"Ugh... good shot."

Vasran | Periwinkle | prose or brackets w/e
Her arms are crossed, which she's hoping will come off more assertive than defensive. The fact that Anders, of all people, was assigned to her team is nagging at her, but she's just... not going to look at him much. While occasionally giving a deliberate glance so as to prove she's not concentrating too hard on not looking at him.
"I say we go for a battering ram," she proposes while Periwinkle is working out their strategy. "We can't use magic, so we might as well go for brute force."
2. Fort defense
Vasran is quite small, which protects her from being tackled by all but the bittiest of elves. In related news, however, she's also very light, and less muscled than those with non-magical fighting styles.
Her best strategy, then, is to wait on the battlements of Fort Periwinkle and wait for someone to storm the walls. When they do, she launches herself over, aiming to land on their shoulders and take them down.
3. Go go go!
There's a flag clutched tightly in Vasran's hand, and she is currently booking it across the field of battle, ducking under snowballs and making for her team's fort. She's nimble, but the snow is still thick, and it's impeding her movement more than she would like. Better find a way to trip her up before she reaches home base with her prize.

ciri | team raspberry | ota
"So... let's say I wanted someone to launch me toward any oncoming enemies with the catapult. You think the snow is deep enough to break that sort of fall?" Is she serious? BERRY SERIOUS.
✖ b. berry rude
OR perhaps you've gotten the surprise on her? Either way, someone is going to end up in a snowbank.
02 — Compared to most on the field, she's probably one of the taller opponents but there's still a handful taller than her. If she happens to spot one, she'll hide in the snow drifts before tossing a snowball out. It misses, smacking against something nearby but that is the idea as she hopes for a distraction long enough for her to rush out. She's not big but she's got power behind her and she's coming at someone like a battering ram.
03 — She runs as if the one giving chase has an advantage over her. It's not the preferred method but Ciri knows where a few patches of ice are and she is hoping to use them to her advantage as she tears across the field toward the raspberry base. She makes sure to not move in a straight line, hoping to give whoever is chasing her a harder time and hopefully force them to focus on that and not to the upcoming patches of ice.
✖ c. raspBEARy
Honestly, she's probably laughing and laughing loudly.

Sherlock | Seafoam | come at him bro/sis, prose/brackets
Stealth on its own is next to impossible here, so distraction is the name of the game. Sherlock uses the actions of his teammates — usually Church, whose bluster in this case is far more useful than annoying — as a cover, under which he can slip into enemy forts and attempt to grab a flag. On his way through the door, though, he ran into you.
Chances are, unless you're a qunari, you're shorter than him. If you are a qunari, you're probably expecting a tackling attempt. But there was nothing stated in the rules about flinging snow in somebody's eyes.
So now there's snow being flung directly at your eyes, and Sherlock darting to one side, aiming for the nearest flag.
2. Got your back
There's colors of all kinds dripping down from Sherlock's hair, staining the back of his neck, spattered against his coat... and he's smiling. For the first time that most of Skyhold's tenants have witnessed, he's genuinely having fun.
As an expression of his joy on the way from Point A to Point B, he grabs the nearest person by the collar and drops some snow down their back.

Anders | Periwinkle | OTA, prose or brackets fine
His attention had drifted for a moment, or maybe a few moments, but it's brought back suddenly at what he thinks he's just heard.
"Did someone say use me as bait? Because that's not happening. I'd like to walk away from this."
2. A Cunning Plan
They can't use magic. Real magic, that is. Otherwise magical is a cinnamon bread he'd commissioned from the kitchen as soon as he'd heard about the snowfight. He knows joining makes him a target. This? Might help.
"Would you like a slice of sweet bread for a half hour of not attacking me? The bread's a couple of hours old." For as long as the bread lasts, any time someone comes up to him with arm raised he can make that offer.
And maybe one day mages won't get disallowed all of their trained skills yet again. People who knew shields, ranged attacks, and moving through snow had advantages here. It rankles a little.
3. Maker That's Cold
His hair is drenched. He's shivering. His teeth are even chattering. He's not made for snow. That doesn't keep him from holding a snowball and facing off with someone in a standoff, ready to fling if they fling, circling as if to make a break for another team's base (and theoretically flags) if they do.
"The base right there is an enemy to us both. You grab one flag, I'll grab another, and no one needs to catch pneumonia?"
4. Not-so-pro Wrestling
While he's not entirely sure how he's wound up in a snowbank this time, or by whom, he's reaching up and grabbing to yank them down with them. Anything to get them buried in snow and freezing as well.

Aleron | Team Periwinkle | OTA
He's been coaxed out, most unwillingly, with a nagging scold about doing his part to help. Of course, somehow he was given the impression this was a training exercise for the young mages present in Skyhold. But what he sees of the training makes very little sense and he's not quite sure what he's meant to be doing.
Thus, he's propped up against a tree looking both baffled and bored. Also looking very much like an easy target.]

Zevran | Team Apricot | OTA
While not much one for snow, Zevran has dressed for the occasion. Bound in white from head to toe in white, bundled against the chill and using every last inch of his Crow and Kestrel training to slip from drift to drift, moving silently as he seeks out and tackles targets.
Who is that behind you? Nothing? From the right a wh-paff of snow, from above? A ninja elf!
PARKOUR
Walls of ice are no match for a master assassin. Zevran slinks and climbs, vaulting from point to point until he is inside the fort. Who's aiming to grab as many of the large, fluttering flags as possible? This elf. This elf is. Is there a sound of a footstep when you are alone? Is there a shadow that seems out of place-
Wait where did the flag go?
Scaling the wall to flip back over with the brightly colored fabric in hand is Zevran- will you give chase or pelt him with snow until he stumbles?

lexa | team raspberry | ota
Lexa has stopped brushing snow off her chest by the time Ruby has led the way to the red team's base (sure, raspberry, fine, but she's going to call it red in her mind. much shorter.). There's still an obvious round mark in the middle of her otherwise-black ensemble, right at the base of her sternum. One guess what got her to join in.
People rush around and in and out, the battle in full swing, as she ties the extra red sash from shoulder to hip and spends a few minutes taking stock of their defenses, and up peeking over the walls getting the measure of their enemies as she presses together perfect snowballs with practiced hands. She seems to have maybe done this before--or at least is not shy, quick to step in and help to repel an assault, issuing rapid directions even if she has yet to have a chance to introduce herself to her new teammates. Meeting people is great, but you know what's better? A catapult.
{ ota #1 }
All black isn't really the best choice for combat in the snow, not if you want to have any chance at occasional stealth. Lexa actually takes a couple minutes and rolls in the snow behind her team's fort until her long coat is more grey and even, in a few places, white. Not that it lasts long with the riot of color flying every which way, but it's enough to let her leap out from behind snowbanks a few times to catch opponents unawares, pummelling them with snowballs before dashing away.
She even, once or twice, half-buries herself in a snow pile alongside a popular path, grabbing the ankles of larger enemies as they pass and yanking their feet out from under them. (Merrill said it wasn't against the rules.) And then the pummelling, and the dashing. Hopefully.
{ ota #2 }
A couple times she gets pinned down behind cover, pressed up against a wall or a rock or hill or tree or some other hastily-constructed defense, counting up the snowballs she has left, making new as quickly as she can with gloved hands, sometimes just one hand with her shield held up over her head. She keeps peeking up or around the edge of her hiding spot to keep an eye out for potential assistance, opportunities to make a break for it, and to launch a well-aimed shot or two before ducking back down, hopefully before the answering barrage comes whizzing past the spot where her head just was.
{ ota #3 }
Really, Merrill said it wasn't against the rules. She 100% condoned and encouraged Lexa's plan to sneak their way into the forts and strongholds of their opponents and destroy their stockpiled snowballs. Preferably by pouring hot water all over their snow, but when necessary by good old fashioned stomping them all to smithereens. That's the easy part; it's getting back out that's going to be dicey.

Or whatever else we talked about on plurk!

Teren | team ??? | ota
The Betrayal (for Team Raspberry)
It happens about ten minutes in: someone from team raspberry is hit with a snowball of their own color. Then it happens again. In the mayhem, it's difficult to tell who or what is responsible, but the tall and shadowy warden on their team is nowhere to be seen. There is treachery afoot.
Further Treachery
a. Periodically, Teren will approach a rival team with her hands up, offering intel in exchange for an alliance against another color. The information is usually good, but unattainable without many casualties. Sometimes it isn't good. Sometimes she does the same thing to two teams at once, absconding before the snowbath and letting them collectively realize they've been had.
b. Oh no, she is hurt. Nearby is a person who she knows has emotions and feels some affection toward her. Please help her, friend. Oh no, there's snow down your back. Oh no. Where did she go.
c. Some other hideous misdirection of your choosing.
Comeuppance?
If you can catch her. She won't go down easy.
COMEUPPANCE!
