East of Perendale and south of Trevis, next to a river's winding course, there lies the bones of a fortress. It is an old and almost forgotten place, a dramatic, clawed seeming thing reaching up into the sky, harsh against the the rolling hills.
It is an ancient place, dating back to 660TE, a testament to an Empire suffering after civil war and grasping to restore its wealth and influence after it had been so shaken. It stands as a memory of grandeur, rather than an icon of it, and bears the marks of devastation and scarring that so much of the land suffered during the First Blight. It was all but abandoned thereafter, host only to the desperate and the greedy, and never for long. Once ornate mosaics now only hold flecks of gold, flakes that stubbornly resisted the hands of looters trying to pry them away. Other colours, reds, whites, greys and blacks, they all remain.
The site was chosen for its riches, sitting atop a mine that once held immense wealth, seams of gold that would bring wealth back into the Empire and help restore stability. Opulence, the central Tevinter staple (aside from slavery and blood magic, some might say).
But they dug too deep, and when the First Blight came so too did the darkspawn.
It has a new master, now, and he serves the Elder One. Parts of this stronghold may be in ruins now, but remember: it is not what lies on the surface that counts, but what lurks beneath it.AD VICTORIAM, AD GLORIA.

Trust Ruby to notice that he's been quieter than usual, though. There's been a fair amount of things on his mind lately, to be fair, but some of them aren't things he's ready to talk about yet, even to a friend. When he is, chances are Ruby's one of the people he'll be willing to talk to about it...but for now, he goes with something that's a bit less specific.
"Ah, I was just thinking." His mouth twitches ever so slightly, a flicker of humor crossing his face just long enough to be noticeable. "Despite what you might've heard, I've done that a time or two, you know. What about you? You've been very chatty lately, so I could ask the same thing."
no subject
She isn't entirely sold on just thinking, and maybe the slight quirk of her brow is an indicator, but... she lets it go. "Well, if ever you need a sounding board for those thoughts you're thinking, you know where to find me." It's casual, easy, but the offer has to be made, and not out of any sense of obligation; Jamie is her friend, was there for her when Emma left the first time around, and graciously took the whole fairy tale character thing very in stride.
And, as for her— she smiles, a little too happy to be sheepish. "I'm a chatty person. I chatter. And, I... things have been. I started seeing someone? That's kind of an unexpected thing, for me."
no subject
He's grateful for the offer. It's good to know that he's got at least one person here who he can talk to if needed, and he gives her a warm, appreciative look over the top of his tankard. That look changes fairly quickly, however - not at the smile so much but at the words that follow, eyebrows raising and disappearing into his bangs.
"Are you, now? Better be someone who's treating you right, or I'll have to have words with him."
Unfortunately, it doesn't even occur to him that it might not be a him at all. There's a few things that still cause him to think in old, established patterns, and despite knowing people like Korrin and Araceli, relationships are one of them, but the meaning is still the same. If someone hurts Ruby, he's more than willing to step in on her behalf if need be. It's the least he can do for his friend.

Jamie's definitely in her top five of awesome people she's met in Thedas. There's a moment of consideration, as she weighs it up. He was so kind and so understanding about the Wolf, about the truth about her, was one of the first she told, here. It seems kind of fitting that he's one of the first she actively tells about this, too. That he's from so different a time than herself doesn't give her too much pause; Thedas might be considered comparatively ye olde, and the Enchanted Forest was, certainly. Jamie's the kind of guy she can have faith in, and very happily.
"I don't think they're capable of not treating someone right." A moment of consideration, and she squares her shoulders before carrying on. "But it's not a him you need to keep an eye on, so much as a her."
She'll give him a moment. Despite the optimism there's a quiet, low nervousness creeping up her spine. "Is... that a thing you're okay with?"
no subject
"Why would you want to know if that's something I'm okay with?," he asks, still slightly confused. "It's not as though I'm courting you myself, aye?"
Not that she's not beautiful, because she is, but he's always just thought of her as a friend. Maybe that's the point, though, and only a second or two passes before he holds up a finger to let her know there's a bit more he's planning on saying.
"Look, let me ask you this, then. Does she make you happy?"
no subject
She inhales, surprised by the second question, though the surprise gives way to another smile, gentler, as her gaze drops a little. "She does, yeah. Really happy."
Ruby has to elaborate a little, though. "I wanted to know if you're okay with it because some people back home really aren't okay with people being involved, if they don't think it's the right people. Two men or two women or... I mean there's all kinds of reasons people can think to judge, basically. It's a little hard to shake the the mentality. But, um. Yes, Adelaide makes me happy."
no subject
He's not sure if that'd stayed the case or not. It wasn't something he'd really given much thought to, to be honest, and he lifts his shoulders in a shrug.
"Not that people talked about it much, mind. There were a few you'd wonder about, but it wasn't my place to say who they decided to be with. And I'm not so sure it's my place to say now. But since you asked-"
Whatever he's about to say next doesn't quite make it out, the thought stopped in its tracks and temporarily lost in the rather stunned look that Jamie turns on Ruby instead. Give him a minute and he'll get back to it, but he can't quite help but gape at her for at least a few seconds.
"Wait, did you say Adelaide?"
no subject
Ruby's brows raise a little, and her smile is fond, if bemused. "Let me guess: is this where you say she's scary and kind of frosty?"
Her tone isn't harsh, more quietly amused. She gets it, most people seem to think Adelaide is kind of... aloof, to say the least. And she is, because she's a politician and a teacher and both of those things go a hell of a lot better if you command respect. It just kind of ignores a whole other side of her.
no subject
Well. Okay. So maybe she's a little aloof, but he's never thought of her as being scary or frosty, except in the 'she can cover things in ice' sort of way - which he's fairly certain isn't the definition of 'frosty' Ruby's going for here. But even with that aside, he's known Adelaide enough to know that there's a lot more to her than what's one the surface.
... Although maybe not as much as Ruby, given that relationship between the two of them, something that gets his mouth to tug off to one side in a slightly rueful way.
"No, it's...och, I'd not even realized she likes women. But she's my friend, too, and I'm guessing if she makes you happy, you make her happy, and that's fine by me." He pauses for just a moment, then adds, a touch wryly, "Maybe you'll be able to convince her she needs to stop and take a break sometimes. I'm not sure I've ever managed to convince her to do that. Not properly, anyway."
no subject
And at the comment about liking women? Yeah, Ruby definitely chuckles as she sips some more beer. "That was a surprise for me too, believe me." And a surprise for Adelaide, actually, but that is something she will leave for Adelaide to tell people, and not make the presumption of sharing. "Hopefully. Maybe we can organise a team effort if she's being stubborn. Deal?"
Raising her tankard a little, she holds it out to Jamie in a little cheers gesture.
no subject
There's a faint note of pessimism in his voice as he says that, but when she holds out her mug, his mouth still manages to quirk into a smile and he raises his mug in a similar gesture.
"Deal, though. She'll not know what hit her. Hey, I bet we could even get her to help us come up with ideas for that scavenger hunt of yours if we played it right. She'd know more than either of us what'd be native to here that'd be good to use."
