WHO: Katniss Everdeen and Yours
WHAT: Falling, and climbing back up again. In many ways
WHEN: Rest of Wintermarch
WHERE: The stables, the ramparts, the staircases, the healing tents.
NOTES: It's Katniss. You know there's going to be something.

Katniss has been taking all her lessons seriously, but the ones she had been working on most were the rogue lessons - lessons in climbing and sneaking in and out of places. Knife throwing into all kinds of targets. Climbing up and down buildings, and quite literally falling off of them.

No one was quite sure what she was training so hard for -- but then most of them had not been to the Emprise du Lion. They had not seen the cages. Katniss was not going to throw away their only chance to save those people, so whatever she needed to know? She would do.

So don't be surprised if she drops in on you, as she falls back into piles of hay or down in a leap.

He had simply been looking for a quiet place to inspect his bow and the batch of fresh arrows. The stables seemed like a great idea, the only noises being the grunts and stomps of the animals there, and the clanking and shouts of the distant training.

What's curious though are the bales of hay in the middle of the barn. What's damn right terrifying is someone suddenly falling from above into said hay pile right as he had stepped up next to it. "Andraste's flaming knickers-! What the blazes!?"

Exhale. Concentrate on the fall. Let your body go and you will keep yourself from getting hurt when you tumble --

She landed well enough, but automatically rolled over to her feet and into an offensive stance when the man suddenly yelled. She looked as startled as he was, as she yelled back at him, "What in the name of the Maker?! What are you doing?!"

"What am I doing?! Not falling out of the rafters or... or - above!" He's pointing to the top of the barn as he yells back, eyes wide as the shock of it all is still taking its course through his mind. "You're going to scare the life out of someone doing that. Or break your neck!"

"I am trying to learn how to fall without breaking my neck! Hence the pile of hay!" Which she huffed, as she gestured to it, "I was doing fine until you yelled like a little girl!"

He sputters at that, eyes narrowing a bit at the implication. "I did not yell like a little girl." Screamed, yes, but in a very manly surprised manner.

Lifting his hands to run through his hair, Garris gives out a sigh, shaking his head just a tiny bit. "You know you shouldn't practice that without some supervision."

"You were high-pitched. Like a little girl." Katniss crossed her arms over her chest, huffing for a moment, before she cleared her throat a little.

"Only if I'm practicing with the ramparts. The barn is perfectly safe." Mostly.

"I don't even think I'm capable of hitting a high enough note to make that feasible, and I certainly don't want any help in finding that out, thanks." He's going to deny this all day if she wants to continue this argument, and judging by how he also crosses his arms, he's not in the mood to do so.

"Ah huh. Nothing ever safe about falling. Can just be safer." After a moment Garris sighs, rubbing his face, then slowly opens up his fingers to stare at the girl. "You're the one from the party."

Honestly she doesn't want to get into this argument either, but mostly because he had a point about this not being particularly safe. Yet she wanted to practice - needed to practice - and Ara simply wasn't available right now.

She stopped, then blinked at him, before she snapped her fingers, "You're the man sitting on the fence." She paused, then said quietly, ".... Listen, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to scare you, and yes, falling can be safer but not safe. I just need the practice."

Mimicking the action Garris snaps his fingers and ends it with his index finger pointing to the girl. "Well I suppose you haven't hit your head yet since you remember that." Dry humor, but the best he had at the moment.

"Well don't you have a falling buddy or something?"

Okay, that made her snort, her lips twisting into a quick smile, before she clears her throat.

"Ah ... no. None of the other rogues or scouts are, ah, as intense as I am about the practice." She paused, thinking about it, "Well, about the learning to fall part. I just want to be prepared for everything."

Oh ho, had that been a smile? Course not to push it he merely raises his brows and sets his hands on his hips.

At hearing that the other rogues aren't as intense, Garris clicks his tongue and begins to look over his shoulder towards the courtyard where he remembers seeing the lot of them going through some intense courses. When she mentions it specifically being about falling though he gives a shrug.

"Where are you falling from exactly?"

She paused, then said with a touch more soberness. "In my mind? I'm falling off the cliffs of Emprise du Lion. There are a lot of dangers there, and one of them is most definitely falling. I want to make sure I'm ready for when a Red Templar tries to make an end of me by tossing me off a cliff."

That has Garris looking back to Katniss and aching a brow. "I had meant physically where were you falling from in here," he says motioning to the rafters and the hole above them.

The mention of Emprise du Lion and and Red Templars has him sighing and his lips thinning a bit, but Garris is taking the subject rather seriously. "Well a hay bale is all fine and good but it's not going to teach you to take a fall in snow. And honestly I'd suggest keeping a line and hook on you at all times." To emphasize that Garris motions to the rope around his waist then pulling out a hook from his pouch.

"... Oh." And now she's flushing red about the ears, before she clears her throat and points to the second story rafter. "From there."

Now he's got her full attention, as does the rope at his waist. She tipped her head to the side, "What's that?"

Maker, she was falling from up there without having someone watch her? Granted he's fallen from higher places than that, but still training you should be a bit safer about it.

At being asked what he has, Garris spins the hook between his fingers for a moment before holding his hand out for her to look at it, even pick it up if she wanted. "Three pronged hook. Knowing to fall is all well and good, but having a good safety line doesn't hurt. Course it works trying to get up things too."

As anyone will tell Garris, Katniss took far too many risks with herself. Someday, that would change.

She takes it, picking it up as she looked it over. Curious, and ... useful. "Where did you get these? And how much will it cost me to get some too?"

Looked up at him. "I'd like the price of the information to be put in with how to use it?"

"This one and a few others I got back in the Free Marches. So I'm not sure I can give you a good estimate of how much they'll be. Over there a decent set made of good metal could cost you a few gold. I'd expect it to be a similar deal here if you go the metals and the smiths."

Raising a brow and tilting his head some, Garris crosses his arms as he considers her questions. "What's your name?"

She frowned - och, there was no way she was getting to the Free Marches any time soon. She'd have to pay for the price of it, and then some. She was broken from her thoughts by her question, and she answered simply.

"Katniss Everdeen. Scout Everdeen, if you're looking for a title. It's the only one I've got."

"Wasn't looking for one in particular, but good on you for making Scout. Katniss." Not that he's against titles, but it's a bit different then a name. And not like he has much of one to give himself. Maybe captain based on the members of his group, but none of them were there save Emmie.

"Garris Vakrie," he offers even if she hadn't asked, but it was polite since he had asked. "The Inquisition should be able to acquire some or make them. Easy enough to make... I think." It was just metal bent at certain angles after all.

"Yeah, and all I had to do was scare the piss at the soldiers who were doing the weapon proficiency test." Katniss smirked a little, before she nodded and held out her hand to Garris. "Pleasure to meet you."

Manners cost nothing, after all. "I'll have to ask, someone, somewhere, if it's possible to get our hands on some of them."

Well now that was a story if there ever was one. "Really? And exactly what did you do to do that? Don't tell me it was falling off a building in the middle of their training." Whatever it was she seemed rather pleased with herself about it.

"I suppose in the meantime you're more than welcome to hold onto that one until more get made." He'd have to account for having one less, but seemed a small price if she could learn it and being of use.

"No ... I proved to them that a half-blood hunter could shoot as well, if not better, than most of their other archers." She bit her lip, "And I may have proven that by knocking their lunch out of their hands with some well placed shots."

She took it, and smiled a little, before she went to her pockets, "I don't have any coin on me -- if you hold on I can go grab some."

Well now that certainly got his attention. Shooting food out of people's hands? Tricky shot, and would certainly scare anyone who didn't know it was coming. Actually even if you did it was damn frightening.

When Katniss starts going through her pockets, Garris raises a hand, motioning for her to stop before crossing his arms. "How bout we shoot off for it? Got your bow on you?"

Which had been the entire point - well punctuated with arrows. Her spelling was horrible, but at least she knew how to make a statement.

She paused as he put his hand up, then blinked, "Well, yes. Up in the loft." She never honestly went many places without it. "On the range or did you have something different in mind?"

"The range will be just fine." At least to start off with. "Get your bow and shoot off a few rounds with me and the hook is yours." Practice was just never the same if you just did it on your own, and while he always pushed himself it was never the same as having someone there to inspire him.

"Deal?"
